I’M STEPHENEY.

I’ve always been the friend with the camera. I have taken a lot of photos over the years and have stacks of hard drives to prove it. Looking back, it seems super obvious that I would become a photographer, but it took me a while to get here.

The first wedding I ever photographed was for a friend in 2003, and it was all on film because digital cameras weren’t really a thing yet. I was paid $40 dollars, but it wouldn’t occur to me until many years later that photography could actually be my career. A chance run-in with a local wedding photographer while bartending in 2010 started me down the photography path for real.

Truth is, I have always loved photography. Mostly because to me, a photograph holds secrets. You can look at it and be transported to another time. It lets you see a memory, a fleeting moment, a small detail about a person. I love that photographs can show you something about who a person is. That part about showing who a person is? That’s what excites me about my work. It’s an honor to witness those that step in front of my lens, to glimpse into their lives, and to preserve these details for someone else to discover.

From engagements to weddings to corporate events to real estate to headshots to birthday parties and anything else that came my way, I discovered that my heart belonged in family photography.

Nowhere else can you witness and document so many raw and real emotions in the span of an hour. Nowhere else can you be welcomed into a family’s inner circle and given a glimpse into their daily lives. The love, the chaos, the pure joy, the mess–I want to capture it all. Every family session is a gift, and I am forever thankful that I still get to be the friend with the camera.
